UC OSPO Education Activities

Abstract

The UC OSPO Network’s Education Committee has spent the past year building shared infrastructure for open source education across the UC system. That work includes a structured inventory of lessons tagged with Bioschemas metadata, a website built in Astro where trainers can filter by role, topic, and learning goal, and lesson pathways that help learners move through the curriculum in a logical sequence. The committee identified real curriculum gaps, including licensing in the UC context, OSPO onboarding, sustainability, and open source literacy, and is developing new lessons using Carpentries collaborative lesson development methods. A new Carpentries membership provides instructor training and lesson development seats to grow that capacity. For delivery and long-term maintenance, the curriculum connects to UC Carpentries, a network of 60+ certified instructors across all ten campuses. We’re also piloting a formal partnership between UC Carpentries and the UC OSPOs to run joint workshops and create clearer pathways between teaching communities and open source practice.

Tim Dennis directs the Data Science Center at UCLA Library and is the UCLA Co-PI on the UC OSPO Network, a Sloan Foundation-funded initiative building open source program capacity across the University of California, with PIs and Co-PIs at each UC campus. He coordinates UC Carpentries, a network of 60+ certified instructors spanning all ten campuses, and co-chairs the Library Carpentry Governance Committee. He recently led an IMLS-funded project delivering 15 open science lessons for library and research communities. He works with the UC OSPO Education Committee on curriculum development, lesson pathways, and a Bioschemas-tagged lesson discovery website launching ahead of UC Open. He’s been building shared research infrastructure across the UC system for 26 years.
